Mayor outlines plan to designate Community Center as heating/cooling center and coordinate with Red Cross

Mayor Jim Trett reported on recent discussions with the Oregon Department of Health Services about designating the Community Center as a heating/cooling center and coordinating evacuation planning with the Red Cross. He said heating/cooling centers have different requirements than evacuation centers and staff are assessing which designation best suits the facility.
Trett said the state has trailers stored in Aumsville that the city could use at no cost and that the state could provide pallets of water for residents. "They can also provide pallets of water," Trett said, and he added that the Red Cross is willing to operate an evacuation center or train city staff to do so. He plans to visit Silverton to see their facility and learn best practices.
The mayor emphasized the importance of preparing for wildfire smoke and other weather events; staff will follow up with state and Red Cross contacts and report back to the council.
