The Village of Mattawan Zoning Board of Appeals approved a variance on July 13, 2026, permitting an accessory building to be erected in the front side yard at 57200 Murray St. The board voted 6-0 to grant the request.
During the public hearing, John Emmert updated the board on a revised site plan that relocates the driveway to the side of the addition rather than using a curved entrance to the rear of the building; he said the variance is needed because the property is configured as a double lot. Member Daniel asked whether a second driveway would be permitted; Clerk Storm-Artis stated that the village driveway ordinance allows one driveway on each road for corner lots, clarifying how the proposed relocation would interact with local rules.
After closing the public hearing, member Streeter moved to approve the variance request submitted by William Emmert; Begeman seconded. A roll call vote was taken: Begeman, Daniel, McLean, Monroe, Streeter and Stuut voted yes and the motion carried 6-0. No members voted against the motion; member Gurley was absent and had been excused earlier in the meeting.
The board recorded no additional public comment, and the meeting adjourned at 7:06 p.m. The approval authorizes the accessory structure notwithstanding the usual front-yard restrictions; any building permits, site-plan reviews, or other administrative approvals required by village ordinance remain separate processes that the applicant must complete.
