City staff outline urban-forest plan update, call for advisory group and commissioners to serve as liaisons

Lindsay Fields, Lacey's climate sustainability coordinator, told the planning commission the city will update its urban-forest management plan this year and convene a community advisory group to help shape goals and policies. Fields said the city completed a Nearmap flyover this summer to refresh canopy mapping and that the team will finalize a canopy assessment before consultant work begins. "We have 29% with, almost a 30% canopy coverage with the UGA and the city limits," Fields said, noting that the update must respond to climate-resilience goals and risks such as emerald ash borer.
Fields described an expected schedule: staff convene the community group this fall (monthly meetings Oct'Mar) with a goal of final adoption by spring 2027. She said the city has $100,000 in climate planning funds allocated for this work. Commissioners asked about serving as liaisons to the advisory group (one commissioner volunteered) and about educational materials for youth; Fields said those items could be included as plan goals and that staff will refine meeting times and membership before work intensifies.
