The Village of Michiana Council on March 14 approved a resolution to co-sponsor a federal grant application to build a Police Safety Building jointly with neighboring Grand Beach. Tim McCarthy moved to approve the resolution; Mike Mumper seconded the motion, which passed by voice vote.
Council also approved a draft police survey that may be distributed to residents at a later date to gather input on policing priorities and community safety concerns. Police Chief Ryan Layman has previously raised operational items that the survey could inform, including equipment needs and community-policing priorities. The Council said the proposed Safety Building site is roughly four acres on the frontage road donated by a Grand Beach resident. The resolution and the survey advance the project to the grant-application stage but do not obligate local matching funds beyond what the resolution describes.
