Council amends Tree Ordinance to limit oak pruning during high-risk months

The Village of Michiana Council voted unanimously to amend the Tree Ordinance to limit pruning of identified oak trees during the months when oak wilt risk is highest. Nancy Thill moved the amendment to state that "Trees identified as oak will not be pruned between April 15th and September 15th. In the event where a tree is damaged or needs pruning, tools must be sanitized, and a latex based paint must be applied to the wound immediately after pruning." Brian Cassidy seconded the motion and a roll-call vote was 5 ayes and 0 nays.
Thill’s Tree Board report earlier in the meeting noted recent herbicide treatment work by Pizzo and attendance at an EGLE webinar on oak wilt, and the newly passed ordinance language was presented as a preventative measure. The council discussed attorney review of tree-service applications earlier in the meeting and previously approved a Tree Proposal application with attorney review; the amendment formalizes seasonal pruning limits and sanitation requirements going forward.
