The Village of Michiana Council voted Sept. 6 to approve park upgrades that include irrigation, regrading and hydroseeding, capped at $40,000. Council member Mike Mumper moved to accept bids from Down to Earth ($19,000) and Serviscape ($20,260) and amended his motion to a not-to-exceed total of $40,000; the motion passed on a 5–0 roll call vote.
Mumper said contractors are lined up and emphasized timing is important for successful seeding. He told the council the seeded area will be fenced off and closed until spring to allow the new grass to establish; the playground and pickleball court will remain open with an alternate entrance along Cherokee. An anonymous resident told Mumper they would make a substantial donation to the great lawn project; the council indicated it will apply budgeted capital improvement funds alongside the gift.
The council opened the motion for discussion and approved the amendment and funding unanimously. The project financing combines the anonymous donation and existing capital improvement allocations; the council asked residents to avoid the hydroseeded areas until the grass is established.
