Council approves use permit to convert Patagonia Elementary classrooms into apartments

The Patagonia Town Council on March 8 approved a use permit to convert two former classrooms at 350 School Street (parcel 106-34-008) into apartment units intended first for teachers and, if available, for low-income public occupancy.

Michael Young, who identified himself as assistant principal and facilities director for Hagerman Public Schools, told the council the project would be privately funded and could proceed slowly to manage costs. "The whole purpose of this is to make a place for our teachers to live," Young said, adding the work will require RFPs for contracts over $100,000 and that the school hopes to use in‑house labor where appropriate.

Young said one existing unit on the site would remain in use and that the plan calls for installing three electrical meters so future expansion can be accommodated. He estimated the renovation would take roughly two years, depending on funding and supply costs, and said tenants would be responsible for utilities. "We may just start with one unit ... and then work up to the second unit," Young said.

Council moved and seconded the resolution authorizing the use permit and voted by voice; the motion carried. The resolution and permit references were read into the record during the meeting as the council voted to authorize remodeling classroom space on a 2,148‑square‑foot parcel at 350 School Street.
