The Seymour Board of Selectpersons voted to accept a $5,000 bid from Joanne Capiello for 100 Prospect Street and authorized the town attorney to prepare transfer documents. The motion was seconded and carried with a recorded majority; one selectperson registered an abstention.
Residents raised strong objections to commercial development during the public-comment period, arguing the parcel is environmentally sensitive and has contributed to local flooding. "Please reject commercial development bids on 100 Prospect Street and preserve this land as protected open space," a resident said during public comment. The speaker cited flooding on Woodside Avenue on 08/18/2024 and warned that removing vegetation could increase stormwater runoff into neighboring properties.
The board opened bids earlier in the meeting and recorded two offers: a $5,000 bid from Joanne Capiello and a $50,000 bid from Prestige Builders. After an executive-session review of the bids, a selectperson moved to award the property to Capiello and instructed the town attorney to prepare the documents to effectuate the transfer. The motion passed with the chair and a majority voting in favor and one abstention noted.
Supporters of the decision spoke afterward. "I'm glad we finally put this to bed," one selectperson said, reflecting the board's view that the long-running item could now move forward. Other residents thanked the board for their consideration and for protecting neighborhood interests.
The transfer process will proceed under town procedures; the town attorney was authorized to complete the necessary paperwork. No additional development approvals were recorded at this meeting.
