Dune City council agrees to revisit short-term rental rules after neighborhood pushback

The Dune City Council voted on Dec. 17 to revisit its short-term rental ordinance and to study changes to how neighbors are notified of proposals affecting their blocks. Council member Duke said experience since the ordinance's adoption shows gaps that need fixing.
"I think there's a lot of issues that we need to resolve," said Larry, who urged better notice to residents, saying they should receive advance mail or email so they can "give their input" and "feel like they are part of the process." Council members said the review will include examining the business-license definition and enforcement tools.
Council members said the effort will not be instantaneous: revising the business-license code first is a prerequisite because the current ordinance treats short-term rentals differently than businesses. Several council members argued for stronger enforcement against repeat offenders, including license revocation where allowed. The council also directed staff to compile a summary of the specific problem property raised during public comment so the existing enforcement process can be applied immediately.
No ordinance change was enacted at the meeting; the council agreed to place the STR review on a future agenda and to refine notice procedures for residents ahead of substantive amendments.
