County announces partnership with Lake Humane Society to improve dog shelter operations

County Administrator Jason Boyd announced that beginning next week the county will form a formal partnership with the Lake Humane Society, and is coordinating with PetFix Northeast Ohio and other partners to improve operations at the county dog shelter. Boyd said partners will help with animal assessments, training for staff on temperament and anxiety testing, heartworm testing and spay/neuter support for animals being prepared for adoption.
Board members asked operational questions about kennel temperatures and veterinary scheduling; Boyd said kennel A was at 72°F and kennel B at 74.5°F on a recent morning and that a vet day was scheduled to ensure all animals in the shelter would be seen promptly. Commissioners and staff discussed volunteer constraints tied to liability and policies and said a phased approach to volunteer programs and enrichment activities will be adopted.
