North Commons expansion will open in phases in 2027; Park Board seeks $500,000 to operate it

Park Board staff told the Board of Estimate and Taxation on July 22 that North Commons will reopen in phases in 2027 as a substantially expanded facility and that the Park Board is requesting $500,000 in additional operating funds to maintain programming, staffing and safety for the new spaces.
"This request asks for an additional 500,000 to operate the North Commons facility," Director Julie Weissman said. Weissman described the project as a transformational renovation that increases the site from about 20,000 square feet to 68,000 square feet, with four gyms, a water park and support spaces including locker rooms.
Staff said the new facility will open in January 2027 in a phased fashion, with the full water park and building operational in summer 2027. The Park Board said funding is needed to ensure maintenance, programming and safety at the larger facility and that those costs are distinct from capital construction funding.
