Council discusses $1.9M road work by fire station; NDOT approves striping alternative for cattle guard

City Manager Richard Braithwaite updated the council on a $1,924,756 road-improvement project around the fire station that currently lacks grant funding; the city's remaining funding need was stated as approximately $1,043,876 and the project will carry into FY2027. Braithwaite said about 40% of project costs will be funded in the next fiscal year and that delays stem from vendor submissions, inspections and retainage.
Separately, staff discussed replacing a failing cattle guard on Carlin Trend Drive. Although the cattle guard sits in an NDOT easement, a 1996 agreement assigns replacement responsibility to the city. Braithwaite said NDOT engineers approved a lower-cost option of textured striping in place of a metal cattle guard, which reduces maintenance and heavy-truck tire damage. He plans to request RTC funds on April 15 and said local businesses and Nevada Gold Mines have pledged possible contributions.
