Council approves special-event liquor license for American Legion, contingent on documentation

Melinda Harris, the city clerk, presented a special-events liquor-license application for the Carlin American Legion Hall for a Fourth of July event and noted the application needed to be updated because the previous licensee was no longer affiliated. Councilmember Lyndsie Whigham raised concerns about whether the organization held the necessary state business license and whether its nonprofit classification was in good standing; she noted the organization appeared to be in default with the state.
Applicant Rick Gillespie arrived during the discussion and stated the American Legion was "back in compliance with its 501(c)(19) status." Mayor Cameron Kinney asked for documentation, and Gillespie said he would provide it. Denise Taylor moved to approve the special-event liquor license conditioned on receipt of proper 501(c)(19) documentation; Joel Nalley seconded. The council voted unanimously in favor and approved the license as discussed.
The council also discussed updating the city's application form to clarify whether applicants are 501(c)(19) organizations and a possible exemption verbiage; staff said they would follow up with the applicant to obtain documentation.
