Matt Garcia, vice president of the IV 9/11 Stair Climb committee and a firefighter, asked the council to support and participate in the 13th annual Imperial Valley Memorial Stair Climb on Saturday, Sept. 12, which commemorates the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks and supports scholarships for future public‑safety professionals. Garcia described the event's mission and the committee's related public‑safety gala and scholarship program.
"For 13 years, our community has worked to ensure the lessons of 9/11 continue to inspire service, sacrifice, and community," Garcia said, and he invited councilmembers, city employees and local agencies to form teams and attend. He also noted that registration and sponsorships help fund three $500 scholarships for students pursuing fire, EMS or police training. Council members thanked the committee for the memorial and encouraged city participation.
