County Small Business Development Center highlights training, bilingual cohorts and local wins

Priscilla Lopez, director of workforce and economic development for Imperial County, and Alexis Adeljo, a Small Business Development Center adviser, told council the SBDC provides no‑cost assistance for startups, business planning, licensing, permitting, e‑commerce and government contracting. Lopez said the SBDC is based in the county's business development center and highlighted local success stories; Alexis described a Spanish‑language five‑month cohort called Mexicana y Prende and an upcoming Caltrans small‑business certification workshop.
"All of this is at no cost, and I'm here to bring this to you because, the great city of El Centro is a supporter and a, funder of this program," Priscilla said. Councilmembers asked about outreach and marketing; staff said federal and state grant rules limit how much funding may be used for marketing and that the city provides referrals and a small annual allocation ($2,000) to support the program.
