Commission continues review of 511 Datcher solar canopy plan after fire‑safety concerns

Representatives for Parallel Products Solar Energy told the commission the applicant downsized a prior three‑canopy plan to two elevated solar canopies at 511 Datcher Street and that the current design displaces a small amount of flood storage compared with the prior scheme. Scott Daggett of Farland Corp. said the updated design reduces overall impacts and moves the canopies farther from the bordering vegetated wetland; he described piles, equipment pads and minor flood‑storage effects in cubic feet.
Commission members and staff pressed the presenters on public‑safety implications after the property experienced a three‑alarm fire the prior weekend. Commissioners requested additional peer review, a city site visit and written responses from the fire and building departments; the commission continued the NOI to Aug. 19. Phil Cavallo, vice president of Parallel Products, said the company had planned fireroads and hydrants and was willing to arrange site visits to examples elsewhere. "The scope of the project...was originally 2.6 megawatts. It's now 1.5 megawatts," Cavallo said while describing peer‑review steps and proposed hydrant locations.
