The Newport News School Board voted 4-1 on July 21 to approve a resolution from Newport News Public Schools supporting a proposed 1% local sales tax to fund public school construction and capital improvements. Doctor Mitchell recommended the board support the resolution, saying the tax "will certainly benefit public school construction."
A board member who moved the resolution called the 1% sales tax a "meaningful opportunity to provide a dedicated local funding source for school infrastructure without placing the entire burden on property taxes," noting past work through the Virginia School Boards Association. Another board member said they supported diversifying revenue sources but would vote no because they were concerned about adding another 1% burden on residents given the city's existing restaurant/meals tax. Miss Buffalo conducted the roll call: Hunter: For; Searle's Law: For; Amon: Against; Harris: For; Best: For. The motion passed, 4-1.
