Board fines Temple Products $500 for mercury exceedance under pretreatment rules

The board found Temple Products in violation of its pretreatment permit after staff sampling on June 18 found mercury at a concentration of 0.0009 milligrams per liter, above the local limit of 0.00018 milligrams per liter. Steve Brown, Public Works Utilities, explained the exceedance and how the enforcement response plan assigns a $250 penalty for exceeding the limit plus an additional $250 for exceeding the limit by more than 20% for a total recommended penalty of $500.
"The analytical results of mercury, with the concentration of 0.0009 milligrams per liter, exceeds our local limit, which is 0.00018 milligrams per liter," Brown said. The board approved the violation finding and the $500 penalty by voice vote.
