Park board adopts 60-day lost-and-found policy for small items

The Elkhart City Board of Parks and Recreation on July 21 unanimously adopted a new lost-and-found policy that requires staff to log and retain small recovered items for 60 days before disposal or other disposition. Matthew Moyers, special project coordinator for Parks and Recreation, told the board the policy fills a gap for items such as towels and sunglasses while high-value property will continue to be handled by the police department.
"This policy only applies to small items," Moyers said, adding there was a correction from a 30-day holding period in the draft to the adopted 60-day period. Board members asked where items would be kept; Moyers said items found at facilities (pools, camps) will be held at the facility, while items found in parks or after special events will be returned to the park office for logging and claimant contact. The board asked staff to consider posting signage or a web notice so residents know lost items are retained and not discarded immediately.
The board moved and seconded the motion to adopt policy 3050 and voted to approve it unanimously. The chair confirmed the corrected 60-day retention would be fixed in the document before it is added to the department's administration policies and procedures manual.
