During public comment a community member proposed a variety of reuses for Bay Shore Mall should the city or another buyer acquire the property. Ideas included interactive exhibits that convert human exercise to electricity, a plant museum with low admission, an indoor theater for local youth performances, an indoor play area for rainy days, arts-and-crafts studios, pottery classes and a multi-sport gym for activities like pickleball and basketball with rentable play space.
The commenter referenced examples in other countries (exercise-to-electricity initiatives in Brazil) and suggested the project could include low-cost admission and partner with existing local businesses (Planet Fitness, local arts organizations). The speaker said they plan to attend the Parks and Recreation Commission meeting to discuss honoring the United Farm Workers Organization at Hammond Park and invited council and staff to explore creative investment and reuse options for the mall.
