Uplift Eureka wins Caltrans grant to fund job-skills training, resource center reports 3,500 visits this year

Sierra Wood, community resources program coordinator for Uplift Eureka, told the council the program was awarded a Caltrans Community Cleanup and Employment Pathways grant to support workforce development, beautification of public rights-of-way and stronger partner coordination. The grant will fund a job-skills training program that pairs classroom modules (at College of the Redwoods Eureka site) with field shifts focused on litter abatement and other beautification work along the waterfront trail; participants receive a $30 stipend per shift.
Wood said the Uplift resource center has had close to 3,500 visits this fiscal year (about 24 per day) and that about 7% of visits were related to housing assistance. She described program capacity as 22 people when participants take maximum shifts and up to about 45 if participants only do the minimum monthly hours to meet CalFresh ABOD work requirements. The Caltrans grant funds the program through next June and staff are seeking additional funding to continue beyond that date.
