County to match federal Safe Streets for All grant; Vision Zero action-plan update planned

The Committee reviewed a recommended increase to the Vision Zero NDA to support a federal Safe Streets for All grant that would fund an update of the county's Vision Zero action plan.
"This grant will allow us a lot more, in person outreach, which gives us a lot more, deeper in the community," Wade Holland, Vision Zero coordinator in the Office of the County Executive, told the Committee. Holland said the total project is estimated at $300,000: $240,000 in federal funds and $60,000 in county match. He noted $30,000 is already in the baseline Vision Zero NDA and the new request is for an additional $30,000 county match to reach the 20% total.
Holland provided brief traffic-safety context, saying that year to date the Montgomery County Police have investigated 13 fatal collisions, including multiple motorcycle fatalities. "So year to date, Montgomery County Police have investigated, as of this weekend, 13 fatal collisions," Holland said, adding pedestrian and motorcycle fatalities were among the incidents.
The Committee supported the request without objection and staff said procurement work on the RFP is underway; if funded, the action-plan update would start with outreach in the fall and likely take about a year to complete.
