Board approves library staffing waiver and adopts 'Strong Readers' policy

On July 16 the Burlington school board approved two curriculum/library actions: a waiver to deregulate the library media specialist position and the adoption of Policy EKBA implementing Strong Readers requirements.
Board members discussed that approving the waiver does not mean the library will be unavailable; rather it allows flexibility so a certified librarian will not be scheduled in the library for an entire day. The waiver was approved unanimously among members present. The board also approved Policy EKBA (Strong Readers Act) for FY26; the motion passed 4–0 with Robert Hill absent.
Superintendent Spears and staff said benchmark testing and the Amira program will continue to monitor growth and that curriculum initiatives will align with the Strong Readers policy.
