Spears, speaking during a special meeting at Burlington School, said recent changes in staffing and his own coaching duties have reduced his ability to serve as director/owner on-site. He described the current employee as “doing a fantastic job” but said the daily two-hour coverage creates a recurring cost. The superintendent recommended watching enrollment and the daycare budget for a few months and exploring whether certified daycare staff already under contract could provide those two hours to avoid hiring new hours.
The board did not vote on a rate change; Spears noted the daycare handbook has already been published for the year, so he did not recommend raising rates at this time. Board members asked clarifying questions and opted to monitor enrollment and budgetary impacts before taking further action.
