Principal and superintendent highlight students, staff and plan incentives for low benchmark effort

At the Nov. 19 meeting the board recognized student Lauren Thomason for recent achievements, including a Greenhand competition win and Miss Northwest Teen, and praised her character and contributions to school publications. Principal Apryl Burleson introduced a 1st-grade teacher (Mrs. Thomason) as the staff spotlight, citing well-structured instruction and classroom outcomes.
Superintendent Gerrett Spears and staff reported concerns about student motivation on benchmark testing after Mrs. Fraire and Spears spoke with students who said they had not put forth full effort on the assessments. Board members discussed possible reward systems to incentivize testing and heard that a Northwestern tutor will be available during math hours for students who need extra help. An ACT workshop at Northwest Tech in early December was also mentioned for interested high-school students.
No formal policy changes were adopted; staff will pilot incentive options and report back.
