District reports Level 1 findings in OSDE special education audit, pledges training and paperwork fixes

Superintendent Gerrett Spears told the board that the Oklahoma State Department of Education conducted the district's first special education audit in 17 years and assigned Burlington Public Schools Level 1 status, the lowest risk category.
Spears said the audit returned findings related primarily to paperwork and timing. He said the state was otherwise pleased with district operations in special education. Mrs. Granados and Spears will complete required online training and work to correct documentation and timing issues to maintain compliance with OSDE requirements.
The board did not take formal action beyond directing staff to complete training and update procedures; no sanctions were reported.
