Fire chief reports retirements, training and costly pump repairs; council approves repair list

Fire Chief Ryan Goede updated the New Germany City Council on staffing, training and equipment on July 7. He reported retirement letters from John Lenarz and Ria Roland and recommended the council approve both retirements; the council approved them effective Aug. 1, 2026.
Chief Goede also reported receipt of a $2,200 CenterPoint grant and that the department has ordered an EV blanket. He outlined recent maintenance costs — an $11,443.52 emergency apparatus bill and an upcoming $336 lighting bill — and said the tanker and Engine 12 failed pump tests with estimated repairs of $19,609.41. The council approved the fire-truck repair list (motion by Kevin Grove, second by Lorn Herrmann; motion carried 4–0). He noted Fire Academy Firefighter I training begins Aug. 5; the city pays upfront and is reimbursed by the state.
