Town Council voted May 13 to advertise a public hearing on a proposed ordinance that would prohibit camping on public property in Saltville except in designated areas.
Chief Bryan Lynch described incidents of people camping on town property and along trails, and he told council there is currently no ordinance to enforce removal of unauthorized camping. The draft ordinance included a definition of “camping,” identified exceptions for authorized special events or written permission from the town manager, and prescribed enforcement and penalties, stating: "It shall be unlawful and a class 1 misdemeanor for any person to camp on public property within the Town of Saltville except within a designated camping area." Town Attorney Paul Cassell reviewed edits to the draft language included in the packet.
Councilmember Ryan Comer moved to advertise a public hearing on the ordinance and Councilmember Cary Sauls seconded the motion. The motion passed by unanimous roll call. The advertisement will set a hearing date and invite public comment; council did not adopt the ordinance on May 13 and will consider public feedback at the advertised hearing.
