Fire and police chiefs report new apparatus, training and school-zone safety plans

Fire Chief Jason Ely told the council the department handled 28 calls for service in the most recent period and 453 year‑to‑date; he reported the brush truck has been delivered and work is underway on skid-unit lettering and lights, a new SXS arrived, grant reimbursement paperwork has been submitted, and a new ambulance is on site awaiting lettering and radio installation. Chief Ely also said he will begin paramedic school on Monday.
Police Chief Randy Haugh reported 101 calls in the last two weeks, noted the department’s appreciation for the newly sworn Sergeant Jeffrey Lay, and said a 2023 Chevy Tahoe will be returned to the dealer for warranty repairs and a loaner vehicle will be used in the interim. Chief Haugh reminded residents to "follow the 20 mph speed limit in the school zones," flagged that the first day of school is Aug. 20, and said he will meet with Superintendent Vince Lindsay to schedule talks with students about electric bike and scooter safety after a resident raised helmet and compliance concerns.
Resident Sherry Lyn told the council that her son uses an electric scooter and frequently sees children without helmets or obeying traffic laws, prompting the chief to say he will review Dover’s ordinance language on electric bikes and scooters for local applicability.
