Strasburg council approves emergency hire, swears in new police sergeant

The Strasburg Village Council on Aug. 19 approved Resolution 2025-31, an emergency measure authorizing the hiring of a new full-time police officer. The motion to suspend the three‑reading rule and approve the resolution passed on a unanimous roll-call vote (motion by Jeff Smith, seconded by Wes Hostetler).
Legal Counsel Terry Seeberger then swore in Police Sergeant Jeffrey Lay during the meeting. Mayor Bruce Metzger presided over the session. The council’s action took effect immediately under the emergency designation. The resolution was recorded in the minutes as “AN (EMERGENCY) RESOLUTION APPROVING HIRING OF NEW FULL-TIME POLICE OFFICER.”
Police Chief Randy Haugh told the council the department logged 101 calls in the previous two weeks and expressed appreciation for the newly sworn sergeant. The council approved the measure by unanimous vote of the members present.
