Public comment at the Hamilton Township council meeting centered on repeated concerns about operations at the township animal shelter. Multiple residents described long waits for adoption application processing, inconsistent website listings and a shortage of staff that is preventing volunteers and potential adopters from being served promptly.
"If we're promoting waived adoption fees, we're gonna get all these more people applying and they're not being answered," said Juliana Carrella, who told council she tried multiple times to help a friend adopt and met unprocessed applications at the shelter. Residents asked the administration for written timelines and clearer tracking of applications, and called for a volunteer coordinator to prioritize outreach and processing.
Speakers also criticized the shelter’s public communications and social media postings, citing examples of dogs listed after they were already adopted and many animals missing personality bios on the website. "The website is outdated... volunteers are posting pictures and videos every day — use what you have," one resident said, urging the mayor's office and shelter staff to coordinate posts and keep bios current.
Council members acknowledged the backlog and directed administration to investigate why some adoption applications were not being processed promptly and to report back. Staff said a new volunteer coordinator had been hired and would begin soon, and that staffing vacancies in attendant roles remain a constraint. Council requested a written update on the status of adoption application processing and the plan to populate missing bios.
