Skateboarders, business owners ask Hickory for skate-park repairs or replacement

Eric Bywaters, who identified himself as the owner of a downtown skate business, told the council the city needs a quality skate park and that the existing facility is deteriorating. Bywaters said he held a recent "solid session" that drew more than 50 skateboarders and asked the council to consider repairs or a new skate park and to provide funding or guidance to organizers.
Canaan Shue, a resident who also spoke during public comment, echoed the request and asked the council to "point us in the right direction" and consider a small budget allocation. Both speakers argued the park supports youth development and community activity. Council did not take immediate action at the meeting but staff offered to meet with speakers after the session.
