Hickory Mayor Hank Guess read a formal proclamation July 21 recognizing the Hickory High School women's soccer team as the 2026 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 5A state champions. "I, Hank Guess, mayor of the city of Hickory, on behalf of the city of Hickory Council, do hereby recognize the 2026 Hickory High women's soccer team," the proclamation stated.
Coach Brian Gillings thanked the council and community for the recognition and praised his players and supporting parents. "It's such a good group of young ladies, on and off the field," Gillings said, adding thanks to assistant coaches and families who supported the season. The council gave the team and coach a round of applause; no formal council action beyond the proclamation was recorded.
