The commission approved file 2026-073 on June 24 to construct a new arbor-style driveway entrance, hang a new inn sign, remove two deteriorated stone pillars and add six diagonal parking spaces at 455 North Oregon Street. Planning staff noted the site is in the historic core district and contains a primary historic resource (the 2.5-story Veil House, Shippo ref. 143) and recommended approval with conditions, while flagging the need for a final parking and screening plan prior to construction.
Kimberly Clark told the commission that staff reviewed historic photos and could not definitively date the two failing pillars; staff and applicant contended the pillars appear not to be original to the early site and recommended a compatible, non-mimetic arbor. Engineer Mike Thornton said the owners "stipulate to the conditions that are provided" and described the proposed arbor as craftsman-style, with shingle-clad bases to avoid creating a false sense of history. Owner Haley Thomas said the project aims to clarify parking and wayfinding for guests and reduce confusion with neighboring properties.
Staff recommended conditions addressing parking dimensions, screening and compliance with off-street parking standards; commissioners moved, seconded and approved the staff findings (dated 06/16/2026) and conditions 1–8 by voice vote.
