Dark Sky Park naming, fundraising and 2026 event dates discussed; county to circulate plan

A commissioner reported progress by the Cameron County Dark Sky planning committee, including five finalist names for the site and a plan to let the public vote via small fundraising "cans" placed around town. "The 5 names that rose to the top... were Sylvan Skies, Cameron County Celestial Park, Onyx Meadow, Sterling Star Park, and May Hollow Skyway," the commissioner said.
The committee suggested using funds raised to pay application fees to the International Dark Sky Association and to support park development. Tentative dates for 2026 events were listed as June 13, July 11 and Aug. 15, with Aug. 15 identified as the priority date because it is close to the Perseids meteor shower peak.
Separately, the chair announced courthouse door-decorating activities in December, public voting for favorite offices and plans to set up a holiday tree on Dec. 2 to invite residents into county offices for community engagement.
