Commissioners discuss higher rec center bid, ADA-driven costs and grant strategy

Chair announced the rec building contract was awarded to Moyer, noting that the bid came in higher than expected largely because the contractor’s pricing structure allowed cancel orders but not change orders. Commissioners and staff discussed walking through possible cost-saving measures and breaking the project into components that could be funded with a grant match from the Me Foundation.

"The ADA portion of it was previously allocated from block grant funding, and so what we're running into is the change in cost from when it was originally allocated to now," Chair said as the board outlined options to use PDDA funding and engineering adjustments to close shortfalls. Commissioner (Speaker 4) said value-engineering suggestions could cut thousands from the total project cost without sacrificing necessary accessibility features.

Staff and commissioners also noted a roughly six-month build-out timeline from order to completion and said the architect will hold a walkthrough with interested parties to review specifications and potential savings. Commissioners will follow up as grant applications are prepared and consider project breakouts to match available funding.
