A committee member who attended the Brownfield Summit in Chicago urged county leaders to pursue brownfield assessment and "rural fund stacking" to ready sites such as the 4th Street School for investment. She described how small investment firms often provide capital alongside brownfield matching grants to rehabilitate sites for housing or light industrial uses and suggested Cameron County could use similar partnerships to attract redevelopment investment.
"We do have these brownfield knowers. We can do assessment and such there, but we might be able to celebrate renovation of it by trying to attract these investors," the committee member said. She recommended combining environmental assessment, storytelling about local heritage, youth engagement in projects and quality‑of‑life programming to create attractive, place‑based redevelopment that could support tourism and local food systems.
