Cameron County explores Starlink for emergency vehicle after Windstream outage

The Chair said Cameron County emergency staff responded to a countywide communications blackout on Jan. 20 that affected Windstream service and that the outage illuminated gaps in public communications.
"On January 20, we responded to the countywide communications blackout for Selle and Windstream," the Chair said, noting that radio communications remained available while telephone service was disrupted. The Chair said county staff issued a press release within an hour summarizing what was known and the next steps.
County leaders said the Office of Emergency Services is exploring near‑continuous backup communications to reduce reliance on local telephone networks. "They're exploring the cost and what it would look like to get, like, STARLINK put in the emergency management vehicle," the Chair said, adding that having a mobile satellite backup would provide connectivity if cellular or radio systems failed.
The Chair said the county is evaluating logistics and costs rather than committing to a purchase. No formal procurement or funding decision was made at the meeting; staff were directed to continue analyzing options and report back.
