The assembly considered Ordinance 2026-16 on July 20, which would amend the Petersburg Municipal Code to create a sales-tax exemption for qualified residents 70 years and older. The ordinance is a first reading and, because it creates a sales-tax exemption, staff said it requires voter ratification under borough charter provisions.
Petition organizer Susan Martinez told the assembly she had gathered roughly 340–350 signatures and asked that the measure be presented to voters "as written" rather than altered. Members discussed whether the assembly may make only minor edits or must submit the petition language unchanged; staff recommended clarifying the distinction between minor and major changes and requested follow-up from the clerk and attorney. Several assembly members said they would like finance and manager input on fiscal impacts before advancing to final reading. The assembly moved the item forward for additional review ahead of its second reading.
