Board hears flood-damage tally of 322 homes; discusses mitigation plan and urgent hydraulic study for CR 13 hole

Chief Deputy Cooper reported to the board that county flood assessments have identified 322 homes with damage: 36 destroyed, 108 with major damage, 83 with minor damage, 34 affected and 61 with no damage. The figures were presented as department head information during the Aug. 6 meeting.
Separately, the board discussed forming a flood control/mitigation plan and possibly adding a line to the county budget to support mitigation work; that conversation remained ongoing and no budget appropriation was made at the meeting. Highway Superintendent Jerry Buum phoned in to report a hole discovered on County Road 13 near 474th Street and later notified the board the hole involved bridge 64-042-50. Buum said he had contacted Ulteig Engineers and recommended an immediate hydraulic study to evaluate options such as a box culvert or a series of steel culverts.
