City reports population growth and job gains; economic development highlights 8 new projects

David Johnson delivered the city's fiscal-year end economic development recap and walked the council through population, employment and project highlights.
"Our population, in Iron County now is around 67,000 people, and within the city, just under 42,000 people," Johnson said. He told council nonfarm jobs in the area have increased from about 24,000 to 27,000 and that manufacturing constitutes about 10% of those jobs. Johnson reported 8 new project announcements, 2 groundbreakings and 7 ribbon cuttings and said the department had responded to 16 requests for information from prospective businesses in the last half of the fiscal year.
Johnson also described outreach and event work, including a near-100% increase in economic-development Facebook following and a rise in event participation for the spring fiesta from about 3,200 to 3,800 attendees (roughly a 19% increase). He said grant and downtown-program funding decisions, and reallocation of some historic-downtown funds, had guided work this year. Council members requested more tourism visit data for future reports and staff said they would include those metrics in upcoming quarterly and annual reporting.
