Everson Lions Club president proposes tree plantings and park improvements in Nooksack

Jayson Loreen, identified as president of the Everson Lions Club, proposed at the Feb. 3 Nooksack City Council meeting that the group plant trees along the new west-side fence at Nooksack City Park to help reduce vehicle noise and highway fumes and to improve the park’s appearance. He told the council the next step is to present the plan to the Everson Lions Club board.
Public Works Director Todd Daniels raised safety concerns about trees potentially blocking parts of the park and said the city would like to add lighting as part of park improvements. Councilmember Marshall Judy asked about adding signage and ‘‘City of Nooksack’’ signs as part of the project. Mayor Kevin Hester indicated support for park enhancements and for future development near the existing horseshoe pits, and the council agreed the discussion will continue at a future meeting.
The proposal was not acted on formally during the meeting; Loreen was asked to bring the Lions Club board’s response back to the council for further consideration. The council did not set a timetable or funding source for the work during this session.
