Several residents of Prentice Place and surrounding neighborhoods told the commission they oppose or want stricter controls on the proposed 303 New Britain Road fill project because of truck traffic, dust and potential health impacts.
Kathy Falcon, who identified herself as a Prentice Place owner, told the commission she and several neighbors include elderly and medically vulnerable people and said she was concerned about coal-ash–type dust and long-term air impacts: "I'm concerned about the dust and the noise, not only for 1 year, for 3 years...I currently have asthma," Falcon said. Other residents described limited driveway widths, close proximity of residential buildings to the proposed access and fears that truck drivers will take shorter residential routes to save time.
Residents asked the commission to require a binding construction traffic-management plan with restricted truck routes, limits on hours of haul, a designated traffic manager on site and dust-control measures. The police department and town staff notes were circulated to commissioners during the meeting and staff said they would solicit additional written comments from Berlin PD and neighboring New Britain traffic authorities for the continued hearing on Aug. 6.
