Oliver County commissioners approve preliminary 2026 budget as departments flag staffing and program needs

Oliver County commissioners voted to approve a preliminary 2026 budget after department heads reviewed line items and raised staffing and program needs.

At the meeting staff presented department-by-department worksheets and line-item requests. The county public-health director (speaker 9) said the district took on new environmental-health duties this year — lodging, campground, RV-park and mobile-home-park inspections — and proposed a 3% salary increase across the five-county district to cover staff pay, a move the director said would increase the county’s share by $2,914. “We assumed responsibility for that last year,” the director said, adding that some transformation funding would likely require hiring new staff and starting new programs, which may not be feasible as long-term funding declines.

Commissioners weighed requests from the sheriff’s office, road and bridge, and other departments. Road supervisor (speaker 6) described equipment purchases and planned culvert hydraulic studies that could alter capital needs. The sheriff’s office and county administration discussed deputy staffing and overtime effects on next year’s wage lines.

The board emphasized the preliminary nature of the vote and said final allocations will be adjusted after revenue estimates and a public budget hearing scheduled for late September. “This does not mean that the new dollars are set in stone,” a staff member (speaker 2) said. The commission approved the preliminary budget by voice vote and directed staff to post detailed budget worksheets to the county website for public review.
