Council approves USDA match to protect Kealoha family conservation easement

Hawaii County Council voted to approve Resolution 595.26, authorizing a program agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). The agreement allows the county and partners to accept and use federally derived matching funds for conservation easement acquisitions.
Dane Kealoha, director of Aina Transactions for the Hawaii Land Trust, told the council the resolution is a critical step that makes it possible to use a $150,000 NRCS matching grant for the Kalo Elo family lo‘i and Niu Li‘i conservation easement. "This resolution and that particular transaction really creates a programmatic partnership between the county and USDA," Kealoha said, urging passage. Council members approved the resolution by voice vote.
