Madeira Beach staff propose doubling stormwater fee from $10 to $20 to narrow a $2M funding gap

Finance director Andrew presented a comparative analysis and recommended increasing the city’s single-family stormwater fee from $10 per month to $20 per month. He said the city’s stormwater fund has historically produced about $680,000–$695,000 in charges for services and that doubling the unit fee would bring receipts closer to $1.3–1.4 million.
"If we go from $10 to $20 we're roughly doubling...so if that's, let's say, on average, dollars 685,000 times 2, now we're at $1,300,000 almost $1,400,000," Andrew said. He noted the stormwater fund carries significant debt service (about $1.5M) and that, while the proposed increase would not fully eliminate the deficit, it would make the fund much closer to covering operations plus debt service. Staff compared Madeira Beach’s proposed $20 to nearby communities—Treasure Island (~$26), Largo ($17), and St. Pete Beach (~$15)—and said the proposed $20 would not make Madeira Beach the highest among peers.
