Sturgis approves purchase of decommissioned AEP 69 kV line and easement assignment

The Sturgis City Commission approved two related items to acquire a decommissioned 69 kV transmission line from AEP and to accept assignment of easements along the route.
Chris McCart told the commission that AEP has decommissioned the 69 kV transmission line heading south through town and requested that the city's bill of sale include an added document allowing AEP's fiber to remain attached to the poles "for up to a 5 year period, until it is relocated." McCart said the document clarifies maintenance responsibility and gives the fiber to the city after it is abandoned by AEP for potential city use.
The city also approved a partial assignment and assumption of easements that would move property easement rights along the line to the city while allowing AEP the right to install new fiber underground if it chooses. The motions authorized the city manager to sign all necessary documents; commissioners confirmed that an interim manager would have signing authority if necessary. Both motions passed on voice votes with all in favor.
