Committee backs package of zoning tweaks aimed at easing multifamily development

Paul Fritz, the city’s planning and zoning director, presented a package of targeted zoning amendments to the Housing and Community Development Committee on July 20, saying the changes are "small tweaks that should have significant impact on supporting housing." The committee voted to recommend the proposal move forward to county review and a public hearing before council readings.
Fritz said the changes are intended to align zoning with the city’s Vision 2035—supporting walkable communities, infill housing and appropriate parking standards—and stressed the amendments are not a full rewrite. If the committee’s recommendation holds, the package will go to the county for an advisory review under the Act 247 process, followed by a public hearing and two council readings in September, he said.
