Commission debates veteran and reserve preference language on police application

Secretary/Chief Examiner Kim Alexander told the commission she had found an application that used a points system instead of percentages to record Military/Veteran preference. Executive Assistant Judy Godbey said the department had met with the union and discussed that Reserve preference should not have a cap on how many times it can be used while Military/Veteran preference may only be used once.
Chairman James Pea asked for clarification about whether the form would show if an applicant had used veteran preference previously, and suggested adding a checkbox with specific wording: "by marking this box I signify that I have not used a Veteran's Preference prior in any application process." The commission discussed whether the Rules and Regulations should be changed to reflect points rather than percentages. A motion to change percentages to points was made and initially passed; subsequently the commission voted to strike that change and leave the Rules as they are under RCW. The application page containing the veteran/reserve language was re-reviewed by the commission.
