Front-line clerk describes value of conference and new mentorship program

Staff member Jake Siriani told the Summit County Library Board that attending the Utah Library Association annual conference and participating in a new county onboarding mentorship program had meaningful professional impact.
"My name is Jake Siriani. I'm entering my 7th year as a library clerk at the Kimball Junction branch," Jake said, describing his conference experience in Saint George. "I felt that it was important for me to be here because of goal 3, nurture culture, where staff feel empowered and valued." He said the conference provided strategies for advocacy and operations that he plans to share with colleagues.
Jake also described a local "buddy" mentorship program for new hires, in which existing staff volunteer to mentor newly hired clerks to reduce onboarding anxiety and create peer-level support. The board responded positively and asked Jake to compile notes from the conference for broader staff training.
